Boggo Road Gaol
Even though this place has been closed to the public since December last year the kindly caretakers allowed us access and we wandered around uninterrupted. What an amazing place. The section that remains standing was originally the women's prison built by the male prisoners of a nearby facility and completed in 1901. This section eventually became a men only maximum security prison but in the 1980's the men rioted and went on hunger strikes to protest over the terrible conditions in which they were forced to serve their time. After an inquest it was decided to close it down as a prison altogether. This section is heritage listed and so is protected from demolition but some of the newer buildings will soon be demolished to make way for a new busway.

Wow! You are teaching and showing me more of Brisbane than I ever knew.... and I grew up in the bloody place!
These are things that I don't even think to see unless we have someone else to show them to. It's amazing what you can see in your own city when you act like a tourist. Brisbane has a lot of interesting history really.
I haven't read that yet but it's high on my list.
